Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli said this in an interview with the RBC-Ukraine news outlet.

"As far as Mr. Saakashvili is concerned, we hope that he will also be treated in accordance with the law. We are following the situation, because Ukraine is a democratic state, and, consequently, everything must be done in accordance with the law. And, by the way, the fact that the court has decided to release Mr. Saakashvili shows that Ukraine is a rule-of-law state," Mingarelli said.

He said that political forces should have the right to express their point of view, but they should do so in full compliance with the law and avoid violence.

"In our opinion, all political forces should have the right to express their point of view and conduct their political activities. However, political opponents should do so in full compliance with the legislation of Ukraine and avoid what can lead to violence," Mingarelli said.

According to him, the EU monitors the development of the situation around Saakashvili.

As Ukrinform reported, on December 11, Pechersky District Court of Kyiv refused to satisfy the prosecutor's request to place Saakashvili under round-the-clock house arrest.

Law enforcement officers detained Saakashvili in Kyiv on December 8. He is charged with assisting members of criminal organizations and covering their criminal activities (Part 2, Article 256 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
