On Wednesday, September 27, the Kremlin-controlled Simferopol district court has sentenced one of the leaders of the Crimean Tatar national movement Ilmi Umerov to two years in a penal colony settlement.
This is reported by Crimea.Realities portal.
Umerov’s lawyer mark Feygin posted on Twitter: “Ilmi Umerov is sentenced to two years in a penal colony settlement. He will stay at home until appeal is considered.”
Lawyer Nikolai Polozov added that Umerov was also prohibited from being engaged in any public activity for two years.
In 2016, the investigators of Russia’s Security Service opened a criminal case against Ilmi Umerov. He was charged under article 280.1 of the Russian Criminal Code (public calls for separatism). Detention, raid in his house, initiation of a criminal case, compulsory forensic psychiatric examination of Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of Crimean Tatar people Ilmi Umerov caused a strong public and international outcry.
