Education and Science Minister of Ukraine Liliya Hrynevych hopes for mutual understanding and civilized dialogue with Hungary in the issue of the educational rights of Ukrainians.
The minister said this at a briefing in Ivano-Frankivsk city, when asked about the harsh statements of Hungary after the adoption of the education law. "Hungary should be interested in the fact that Ukrainian citizens of Hungarian descent will have more chances to integrate into Europe. It is illogical to block any efforts for this integration. In addition, they should be interested in the fact that these citizens will be able to realize their potential in Ukraine, not just to leave for Hungary immediately. Having graduated from these schools [with Hungarian language of study], children have two options: either stay in places of compact residence having only secondary education, or go to learn to live in Hungary. I hope that we will reach mutual understanding and civilized dialogue in the issue of the educational rights of Ukrainian citizens, regardless of their national origin," Hrynevych said. The minister noted that Hungary's recent statements were "rather harsh" and suggested "this is due to the fact that provisions of the new education law are not fully understood.” Hrynevych intends to meet with the Hungarian education minister on October 19.
