As reported by the parliamentary correspondent for Censor.NET, British national Nigel Brown won the greatest support of the lawmakers at a preferential voting. However, the MPs still failed to approve his candidacy with only 200 out of the required 226 votes were cast for him.
As reported, Yehor Soboliev said on Feb. 23 about the attempt to appoint "a certain British national Mr. Brown" as an independent auditor of the NABU. On March 16, several members of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Corruption Prevention and Counteraction recommended two candidates for the NABU auditor. According to Soboliev, that decision was illegitimate. Petro Poroshenko Bloc (PPB) faction MP Mustafa Nayyem said: "PPB and People's Front members tampered the documents and shoved "British national Nigel Brown" who appeared as if from nowhere."
After the Verkhovna Rada rostrum was unblocked on March 16, the lawmakers voted down the proposal to appoint the NABU auditor out of two candidates, Robert Storch and Nigel Brown. Yehor Soboliev accused the firm run by Brown of serving the interests of the Russian oligarchs. On March 17, the meeting of the parliament's Committee on Corruption Prevention and Counteraction which was supposed to tackle the NABU auditor issue did not take place as many of its members were missing.
Commenting on this situation, Petro Poroshenko Bloc (PPB) faction MP Iryna Lutsenko said: "There cannot be a single candidate for the post of the NABU auditor." In turn, Batkivshchyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko noted: "Batkivshchyna faction intends to support nomination of U.S. Department of Justice member Storch for the post of the NABU auditor."
