"The Russian Federation Ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Gennadiyevich Karlov, sustained a fatal injury in an attack in Ankara today. We qualify the incident as a terrorist attack," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told reporters on Monday.

"We are keeping in contact with the Turkish officials, from whom we have received assurances that a thorough, comprehensive investigation will be conducted and the killer will be punished," Zakharova also said.

Karlov was born on February 4, 1954. In 1976 he received a degree in international economic relations from the Moscow Institute of Foreign Relations of the USSR Foreign Ministry. In 1992 he graduated from the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

In diplomatic service since 1976.

In 1976 - 2008 Karlov held various positions at the Foreign Ministry's central office and abroad.

Between July 9, 2001 and December 20, 2006 he was Russia's ambassador to North Korea

In 2007 - 2009 he served as Deputy Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Consular Department.

Between January 26, 2009 and July 12, 2013, he led the Russian Foreign Ministry's Consular Department.

Since July 12, 2013, served as Ambassador to Turkey.
