Ukraine could stop operating 400 km of gas pipelines in next 10 years

Ukraine could stop operating 400 km of gas pipelines in next 10 years
13 of Septeber 2016 г.
Ukraine could stop operating around 400 km of gas pipelines in next 10 years due to surplus capacity, President of public joint-stock company Ukrtransgaz Ihor Prokopiv has said - Interfax.

"We have reached the point where we can approve a plan by the government and say to the whole world that we do not require 275 billion cubic meter gas pumping capacity, which incurs extra expenses for maintaining staff, compressor stations and other things. We could stop operating around 400 km of gas pipelines in the next 10 years," he said in an interview with the NV Business publication.

He said that today around 30% of gas compressor units are idle due to the large surplus capacity of the Ukrainian gas transport system.

Ukrtransgaz intends to mothball industrial assets not used by the company.

"Today we have a clear strategy for the next 10 years, according to which we would start optimizing the gas transport system. It must be ready for challenges we spoke about: a zero option, 30 and 70 billion cubic meters of transit across Ukraine a year," Prokopiv said.

The company continues upgrading gas pipelines and gas compressor units. The company is switching to electrical drives and in 2015 and saved UAH 200 million.

Prokopiv also recalled that there are projects to develop and build new transit routes on the western border of Ukraine.

"The start of imports from Europe showed that Ukraine can pump gas not only from east to west, but from west to east. Now we have interesting proposals to develop and build new transit routes in Ukraine from gas transport system operators of neighbor countries. I think that the state should study and compete for these routes, just as it competed for reverse supplies earlier," he said.
