NewsRSSRussia deploys 28 combat aircraft in Syria, planning to send 2,000 military personnel
22 of Septeber 2015 г.
"There are 28 fighter and bomber aircraft at an airfield in the western Syrian province of Latakia," one of the officials told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. A second official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the figure and added there were also about 20 Russian combat and transport helicopters at the base. That official also said Russia was operating drones over Syria, but did not give additional details. According to the officials, Russia has sent 12 SU-24 attack aircraft, 12 SU-25 ground attack aircraft and four Flanker fighter jets. "This kind of aircraft suggests that the Russians intend to exert their combat power outside of Latakia in an offensive role." Experts said the buildup is likely a prelude to military action. At the same time, according to the Financial Times, Russia is to deploy 2,000 military personnel to its new air base near the Syrian port city of Latakia, signaling the scale of Moscow's involvement in the war-torn country. The deployment "forms the first phase of the mission there," according to an adviser on Syria policy in Moscow. The force will include fighter aircraft crews, engineers and troops to secure the facility, said another person briefed on the matter. The pair declined to confirm whether Moscow had sent surface-to-air missiles and fighter jets, as alleged by Washington at the weekend. But Russian and western military experts said surface-to-air missiles were an integral part of the defenses of any air base. Three western defense officials agreed that the Russian deployment tallied with the numbers needed to establish a forward air base similar to those built by western militaries in Afghanistan. другие новости
