NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai said in the course of the Yalta European Strategy annual meeting in Kyiv, Censor.NET reports citing Novyi Rehion.
James Appathurai said that according to NATO and other experts' analysis, Russia had motivation for its actions. He pointed out that the first motivation was Russia's false feeling that it was encircled and under pressure while the Russians felt that they had been deprived of the right to determine the sovereignty of their neighbors.
He also noted that NATO was obliged to assist its partners facing pressure from Russia adding that he personally did not believe in the efficiency of the agreements and international bargaining because they always led in the same direction. He explained that actually the agreements were usually reached in large countries on the expense of small ones. On the opinion of the NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary, the organization cannot enter into such arrangements. The NATO representative concluded that it was impossible to have one more Yalta arrangement as a result.
Earlier, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin stated that NATO has done much more for Ukraine than the EU.
