Ukraine resumes electricity imports from Russia, price goes up

Ukraine resumes electricity imports from Russia, price goes up
7 of Septeber 2015 г.
After two weeks of halting electricity imports from Russia, Ukraine has resumed its purchases from September 6, according to National Energy Company Ukrenergo, while the price will rise by 5.6% compared to August.

"The value of imports of electricity at maximum load (as of 21:00 Kyiv time on September 6) was 800MW, at minimum load (as of 03:00 Kyiv time) - 380MW," the report says.

According to the report, Ukrenergo did not apply scheduled restrictions and blackouts to consumers.

It is also reported that as of 21:00 Kyiv time on September 6, a predetermined limit of regional electrical power consumption was exceeded by 61MW, or 0.4%. Two regions, Donetsk and Kherson, exceeded the limit of consumption of electric power by more than 10%.

The National Energy Regulatory Commission established for Energorynok state company, operator of Ukraine's wholesale electricity market, the purchase price of electricity for September from the state-owned Ukrinterenergo company, which imports electricity from Russia: UAH 950.1 per MWh, which is 5.6% higher than the August price (UAH 900 per MWh).

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukraine resumed electricity imports from Russia in early August, after a two-month break. However, after three weeks of importing electricity from Russia due to an abnormal heat wave, Ukraine suspended such purchases from Russia starting from August 24.

Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Volodymyr Demchyshyn noted that importing electricity from Russia is cheaper than own generation.

On August 26, first deputy director of Ukrenergo Vsevolod Kovalchuk said that National Energy Company Ukrenergo had drafted a schedule of power outages across Ukraine for the coming autumn and winter seasons, calling it less harsh compared to emergency or rolling blackouts last year.

On August 28, Demchyshyn said that there would be no rolling blackouts in the coming winter, which were practiced last year due to the acute shortage of thermal coal.
