NATO: Ukraine not ready for membership
27 of May 2015 г.
Ukraine is not ready for membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), but the probability of its joining the alliance after appropriate reforms must be guaranteed.
NATO's Deputy Assistant Secretary General Jamie Shea said this during a discussion entitled "Ukraine & NATO: Partnership to keep Europe Whole and Free" held in Kyiv on Wednesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.
"Ukraine is not ready [for membership in NATO]. Now there are more important priorities regarding the solving of the situation in the east and reforms in many areas," he said.
According to him, assistance to Ukraine is not just a moral obligation to help the country in its democratic challenges, but it is also in the security interests of all members of the alliance.
He said that although the latest Minsk agreements were not perfect, at this time they provided the best option to address the situation. In this regard, the main task is to ensure that the Minsk agreements are implemented.
