The day of mourning and commemoration of the victims of deportation of the Crimean Tatar people is marked today in Ukraine at the state level. This year Ukraine marks the 71st anniversary of the deportation, Ukrinform reports.
The deportation of the Crimean Tatar people, which began on May 18, 1944, is one of the greatest crimes of the Soviet regime. The Soviet regime accused the Crimean Tatar people of collaboration with the Nazi Germany during the World War II. In all, 200 thousand people of indigenous population of Crimea, including 183,000 Crimean Tatars, were deported. March 20, 2014, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the resolution to guarantee the rights of the Crimean Tatar people as part of the Ukrainian state, having recognized the Crimean Tatar people as the indigenous population of Ukraine. At 19:00 today, May 18, the mourning rally in memory of the victims of the genocide of the Crimean Tatar people will be held in Kyiv. As reported, the occupying authority in Crimea banned Mejlis from holding the mourning rally dedicated to the 71st anniversary of deportation of the Crimean Tatars in Simferopol. FM-TV
