The United States is open to participation in the negotiation process on resolving conflict in Ukraine and ready to join the "Normandy format" if the other parties will give their consent.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said this at the Institute of Peace in Washington on Wednesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reported.

"Of course, the United States is open to any format that the parties consider useful. We have stated publicly that if the countries of the 'Normandy format' agree we can play a role during the consultations or at the negotiating table, then we are open to it," Nuland said.

At the same time, according to her, even if Washington and Brussels are not involved directly in the negotiations, it does not mean that the U.S. and the EU do not play an overall role behind the scenes at a bilateral level and in their messages to Ukraine and Russia. Nuland explained that on the one hand there is a support of Ukraine's economic, political and security fields, and on the other hand, there is the policy of sanctions by which the United States and the European Union "together provide a framework for diplomacy."

Nuland also noted that in the future "the United States wants to see Ukraine as a prosperous, democratic, stable and integrated European state."
