A traditional rally takes place in honor of this holiday, which is not recognized at the official level. Its holding has not been agreed with the city authorities. Gathering of participants was scheduled for 3 p.m. at Oktiabr cinema, with subsequent procession to Druzhby Narodov park, where a rally is to take place at 5 p.m.
Earlier, leader of the Belarusian People's Front Alexey Yanukevich stated that the organizing committee decided to leave the rally in political format. The theme of the event is 'Independence, solidarity with Ukraine, a protest against anti-democratic authorities of Belarus.' The main slogan of the event is 'Together for peace and independence'.
Originally the event was planned two hours later, but was transferred to 3 p.m. by Minsk city executive committee since people allegedly complained about blocking the roads during rush hour in the previous years. The applicants for their part believe that the authorities changed it to business hours trying to reduce the number of its participants.
The organizers called on people to come with national white-red-white flags and abandon the party symbols, as well as any slogans and banners, the content of which "does not meet the stated objectives, namely - Freedom Day, Protection of Belarusian independence and solidarity with Ukraine … and refrain from any kind of radical slogans calling for violence and those that do not correspond to the subject of the procession," Yanukevich told Radio Svoboda.
As an example, the politician gave an example from last year's event, where there were portraits of Ukrainian nationalists, as well as a banner reading "Death to the Kremlin occupiers". "On March 25 we are marching on Freedom Day not to change the authorities or to riot. We are going to show our love of the country, language and culture. We are marching to demonstrate our commitment to the independence of Belarus. We are marching to show ourselves and the world that we are a people who want to live in freedom and dignity on our own land," the organizers wrote on Facebook.
