"Both [German Chancellor Angela] Merkel and [French President Emmanuel] Macron represent the European Union. It is impossible to get past this [gas] issue, but it is not the basis for restoring peace in Ukraine. This is an important part of the negotiations for Ukraine because the ten-year contract is expiring, and there is an opportunity to meet. Undoubtedly, [Normandy Four] leaders cannot but use this opportunity. But again, it is not the basis for achieving peace within the Minsk agreements. It is a separate important financial issue for us, but it is not a matter of restoring peace in Donbas," Prystaiko said at a press conference on Friday, November 1.
Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Dmytro Kuleba, in turn, recalled that Ukraine's parliament had passed a law on Naftogaz's unbundling.
"This is not just for the purpose of our further integration into the EU energy market, but also for the purpose of disarming Russia in negotiations when it tries to use gas as a weapon," he said.
