Merkel, Putin discuss gas transit through Ukraine

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin have held a telephone conversation to discuss Russian gas transit to the EU via Ukraine after 2019, the Kremlin's press service has reported.
"In connection with the holding of the next round of trilateral Russia-EU-Ukraine ministerial consultations in Brussels today, there was an exchange of views on the continuation of the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine to Europe after the end of the term of a respective contract at the end of 2019," the report reads.
Gas talks with the participation of the delegations of Ukraine and the European Union started in Brussels on October 28 before the main meeting in the trilateral format with Russia. Earlier, the European Commission noted that the trilateral talks would focus on how to reflect the EU energy rules in a future framework agreement, on the duration of a contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, and on the required volumes and tariffs.
