Ukrainian human rights commissioner Liudmyla Denisova has met with the wife of Ukrainian journalist Pavlo Sharoiko, convicted in Belarus, to discuss further steps for his return to Ukraine.
"In the morning, at a personal reception, I spoke with the wife of Ukrainian journalist Pavlo Sharoiko convicted in Belarus. We found out at what stag Pavlo's case is and determined further steps for his return to his homeland," Denisova wrote this on her Facebook page on Tuesday. In addition, she said, the reception was also attended by parents whose children are being held in Thai prisons. They asked for assistance in the King of Thailand pardoning their relatives as they have been sentenced to 25 years in jail. She said that she had also been approached by a Ukrainian who had been convicted of alleged extremism and was serving his sentence in the territory of the temporarily occupied Crimea. Denisova stressed that this man had the status of an internally displaced person. She added that the Ukrainian had asked for help in resolving the issue of housing, one-off financial assistance, treatment and employment. "On my request, Secretariat staff will address the relevant authorities," Denisova said. Ukrainian citizen Pavlo Sharoiko, a UA:Ukrainian Radio correspondent in Belarus, was arrested in Minsk on October 25, 2017. The Belarusian State Security Committee (KGB) charged him with "espionage" and the creation of an agent network. He was sentenced to eight years in prison. The Supreme Court of Belarus did not comment on the trial. In May 2018, KGB Chairman Valery Vakulchik did not rule out that in the future, Sharoiko could be exchanged for Belarusian citizen Yury Politika who is on trial in Ukraine. Vakulchik said in October 2018 that Belarus was considering pardoning Ukrainian journalist Sharoiko. On September 26 this year, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that he was ready to pardon Sharoiko in exchange for Politika. Politika was detained by the Security Service of Ukraine on a Chernihiv-Gomel bus at the Novi Yarylovychi border checkpoint on June 16, 2017. A file was found in Politika's phone containing a plan for the Shtorm offensive carried out by the Ukrainian army in the area of the anti-terrorist operation (ATO). The 33-year-old denied charges of espionage and said he was going to serve as a volunteer fighter in the ATO area. The first court hearing was held on February 13, 2018, and the consideration of the case on the merits began in April 2019. The Belarusian Foreign Ministry denied Politika's involvement in the activity of special services. другие новости
