Ukrainian Consul Hennadiy Breskalenko has managed to visit Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko, who was unlawfully convicted in Russia, his daughter, Yulia Sushchenko, has told Ukrinform.
"Today the consul managed to visit my father at the Lefortovo detention center. He feels fine, if you can say so, taking into account all the conditions in which he has been here for almost two years... He conveys greetings to everyone. He submitted documents for the permission to make calls to relatives, but it is not known when they will be provided," she said on Monday. As reported, Paris-based Ukrinform correspondent Roman Sushchenko was detained in violation of international rules on September 30, 2016 in Moscow, where he arrived on a private visit. On October 7, he was charged with "espionage." Russia's FSB claimed that Sushchenko is a member of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. The latter denied this allegation. On June 4, the Moscow City Court sentenced Sushchenko to 12 years in a high-security penal colony. On June 5, a complaint was filed against the verdict issued.
