The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry points to political motives behind the persecution of Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko and demands his release, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mariana Betsa has said.
"We again emphasize political motives behind the case. We demand the release of journalist Sushchenko - hostage to Russian aggression," she wrote on Twitter on May 28. As reported, on May 28, the Moscow City Court hosted a session in the case of Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko, who was illegally detained in Moscow, in which the debate between the prosecution and defense parties was held. The prosecution asked for a 14-year prison term for the journalist in a high-security penal colony. According to Sushchenko's public defender, Mark Feygin, the verdict will be announced on June 4, 2018. As reported, Paris-based Ukrinform correspondent Roman Sushchenko was detained in violation of international rules on September 30, 2016 in Moscow, where he arrived on a private visit. On October 7, he was charged with "espionage." Russia's FSB claimed that Sushchenko is a member of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
